This method summary details the approach taken to assessing river and lake water bodies which are at risk of failing the environmental objectives of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), because of morphological alterations. Assessment methods for transitional and coastal water bodies are recorded elsewhere1 . Morphological alterations are not relevant to groundwater bodies.
