    • Next Steps - Play your Part in Preventing Future Blooms

Every person in Northern Ireland needs to consider how their wastewater impacts on the water environment. We all have a part to play in this long-term effort to positively contribute to a sustained improvement in the status of our water bodies.

    Pollution from Urban Wastewater/ Drainage

What can you do as a householder to help protect water quality in your local area?

    DO

    • Do connect toilets, sinks, baths, washing machines or dishwashers to the foul drain.
    • Do check your drains. If wrongly connected, put them right.
    • Do ensure chemicals, paints and used cooking oils are disposed at household waste recycling centres.
    • Do use chemicals and pesticides around the home carefully and dispose of associated packaging wisely.

    DON’T

    • Don’t dispose of cooking fats, oils and greases, motor oil, chemicals, paint and detergents to household drains or road gullies.
    • Don’t dispose of household items such as nappies, cotton buds, razors, sanitary items and syringes down the toilet.
    • Don’t allow entry of chemicals or pesticides into any drains, sinks, toilets, waterways or ditches.
