Every person in Northern Ireland needs to consider how their recreational activities impact on the water environment. We all have a part to play in this long-term effort to positively contribute to a sustained improvement in the status of our water bodies.

    Recreational Activities

Enjoy spending time in the great outdoors? Help reduce pollution to our water environment by some simple actions:

    • Do not litter – put rubbish in bins or take away with you to dispose of adequately.
    • Prevent greywater from motorhomes, caravans or other mobile homes from entering your local water environment by disposing of at appropriate facilities.
    • Clean any fishing equipment and waders between going to different locations.

If you have a boat, make sure to:

    • If using motorised boats, ensure adequate fuel storage, etc.
    • Ensure use of pump out stations to dispose of wastewater
    • Spillproof fuelling
    • Reduce plastic on board
    • Use non-toxic cleaning products
    • Use eco-friendly bottom paint for boats

Invasive species are being more prevalent within our water environment, ranging from plants to animal species. To find out more about invasive species in Northern Ireland, and what they may look like, EU Invasive alien species | Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (daera-ni.gov.uk).
