CAFRE Racing Club inspires the next generation of jockeys and equine professionals
Date published:
Students with a passion for racing and equine performance are finding their stride within the Racing Club at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE).
This academic year students at Enniskillen Campus have made good progress and gained hands-on experience, partaking in this extra-curricular activity.
From the outset, the club welcomed a strong intake of new students eager to develop their riding skills and gain real-world racing experience. Over the course of the year, these students have demonstrated remarkable growth, building not only ability in the saddle, but also the fitness, strength, and discipline required to work with racehorses effectively. Their development reflects the club’s commitment to providing an immersive, industry-relevant learning environment.
A key highlight of the year came in December, when students had the opportunity to take part in a specialist schooling day led by Jockey Coach Paddy Flood. This invaluable session allowed riders to refine their jumping technique and build confidence over chase fences, both in the outdoor arena and on the schooling lane. Participating students worked with a combination of racing prospects and experienced schoolmaster horses. The day also provided a learning experience for those observing and assisting, offering direct insight from an industry professional.
Following the Christmas break, students returned to a dynamic training schedule, with horses progressing to faster work sessions at Moira Gallops. Despite challenging weather conditions, both horses and riders rose to the occasion, delivering impressive performances on the grass gallops and further honing their race readiness.
The excitement of competition began at the Farmacaffley Point-to-Point in Armagh, where CAFRE Racing Club fielded three horses. Students and recent graduates took to the track, gaining valuable race experience on what is known to be a demanding course. This marked the beginning of a series of outings that would see students continue to build confidence and capability in real racing environments.
Subsequent fixtures, including Portrush and Loughanmore, showcased the commitment within the club. Notable performances included fifth-place result for Level 3 Equine Management student Roisin Moore, her first race placing.
The season culminated at the local Necarne meeting, a two-day event that highlighted both the resilience and ambition of CAFRE students.
Strong performances across multiple races reflected the consistency of training and the determination of both horse and rider partnerships. Even in moments of challenge, students demonstrated professionalism and perseverance, key attributes for success in the racing industry.
Beyond race results, CAFRE students distinguished themselves through their exceptional standards of horse care and presentation. At every meeting attended, the team secured ‘Best Turned Out’ awards, recognition of the meticulous preparation, grooming, and attention to detail. This achievement reflects not only technical skill, but also a deep sense of responsibility, compassion, and pride in representing CAFRE. Throughout the year new horses were also successfully introduced to the yard, demonstrating both the quality of training and the adaptability of the riders.
For prospective students considering a future in racing or the wider equine industry, CAFRE’s Racing Club offers a unique and enriching pathway, alongside their academic course. Combining practical experience, professional coaching, and competitive opportunities, the programme equips learners with the skills, confidence, and industry insight needed to succeed.
Equine courses at Enniskillen Campus run from Level 2 to BSc (Hons) with apprenticeship options available. Our next Open Day at Enniskillen Campus is on Saturday 10 October. To find out more visit the CAFRE website.
