Views sought on fisheries management plans for demersal and pelagic stocks in the Irish Sea

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking views on proposals for two draft fisheries management plans (FMPs) designed to improve the long-term sustainability of demersal and pelagic stocks in the Irish Sea.
The draft Irish Sea Pelagic FMP sets out the policies to sustainably manage the Irish Sea herring stock, while the draft FMP for the Demersal fisheries in the Irish Sea sets out the policies to contribute to the sustainable management of demersal fisheries catching Nephrops (lobster and prawn), cod, haddock, whiting, sole and plaice.
The fisheries management plans have been developed jointly by DAERA and the Welsh Government.
The draft FMPs are a commitment under the UK Joint Fisheries Statement and have been developed through engagement with the fishing industry, environmental organisations and science partners.
They set out objectives and actions designed to protect pelagic and demersal stocks for future generations and ensure the fishing communities that rely on them can continue to thrive.
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir commented: “The Irish Sea fisheries are of significant economic, social and environmental importance. I recognise that the fishing industry faces many challenges, but it is essential that we are proactive in taking action that protects ecosystems and fish stocks for future generations.
“These Fisheries Management Plans represent an important step in ensuring that both demersal and pelagic stocks are managed sustainably, balancing the protection of the marine environment with the needs of fishing communities and businesses that rely on them.
“These draft plans are part of a wider programme of Fisheries Management Plans that my department is responsible for delivering. I would like to thank industry representatives, scientists and stakeholders who have contributed to their development through the working groups and engagement process to date.”
Minister Muir concluded: “I encourage all interested parties to respond to these consultations to help inform the final plans and support the sustainable future of our fisheries.”
The formal 12-week public consultation on these draft FMPs runs until 21st October 2026 and offers stakeholders a further chance to shape them before they are finalised by the end of the year.
