Regulatory fees and charges are developed in line with the NIEA Regulatory Charging Policy 2023. This policy can be viewed at the link below:

    Important Notice 2025-2026

NIEA discharges its regulatory functions for a number of environmental regimes (waste, water, pollution prevention and control, and radioactive substances) through the application of fees and charges on companies and operators. NIEA Regulatory Charging Policy 1 April 2023 details how we use charging schemes to recover the costs of our regulatory activities in processing applications and compliance monitoring.

NIEA’s fees are set in accordance with statutory requirements presented in Department of Finance (DoF) and Treasury guidance. One of the key aspects of DoF and Treasury guidance is the maintenance of full cost recovery, whereby the income generated from the charging schemes should cover the cost of the resources involved in delivering NIEA’s regulatory activities and service.

After careful consideration and in order to meet full cost recovery for the current period of regulatory activity, NIEA are increasing their fees for 2025/26 by 6.19%. This increase is based on an analysis of the projected cost profile for the 2025/26 financial year and takes into account factors such as high levels of inflation experienced in recent years
