Water pollution occurs when harmful substances such as chemicals, excessive nutrients or microorganisms cause an impact on a waterbody such as a stream, river, lake, ocean or aquifer. These impacts can damage our ability to use or enjoy the waterbody as well as affect many of the plant and animal species that call them home.
