    09 December 2025

    Following the successful completion of surveillance activities around a backyard poultry flock near Bangor, County Down, the 3km Protection Zone (PZ) put in place there will merge with the 10km Surveillance Zone (SZ).

    This is effective from 18:00 on Tuesday 09 December 2025.

    All the measures that must be adhered to within the SZ can be accessed on the Disease Control Zone Declarations page.

    05 December 2025

    Following the conclusion of veterinary surveillance activities, the Surveillance Zones (SZs) put in place following confirmation of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in commercial poultry premises near Pomeroy, County Tyrone and Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh on 7 November 2025, will be lifted.

    This is effective from 20:00 on Sunday 07 December 2025.

    PZ and SZ remain in place near Bangor, County Down.

    Disease Control Zone Declarations | Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs

    The Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) for the whole of NI remains in place, which means it is a legal requirement for all poultry and other captive birds to be housed or otherwise kept separate from wild birds. As part of the AIPZ, bird keepers must follow strict biosecurity measures in order to mitigate against disease incursion.

    A ban on the gatherings of galliforme (including pheasants, partridge, quail, chickens, turkey, guinea fowl), anseriforme (including ducks, geese, swans) and poultry is also in force.

    Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) | Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs

    03 December 2025

    The Republic of Ireland (ROI) has confirmed the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 at a commercial poultry premises in County Cavan, close to the border with County Fermanagh.

    The boundary of the 10km Surveillance Zone initiated by the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of the ROI extends into County Fermanagh.

    Consequently, DAERA must take appropriate disease control measures to mitigate for onward disease spread.  The CVO for NI has declared the area extending into NI from the ROI which lies within 10km of the infected premises to be a Surveillance Zone, effective from 18:00 on 02 December 2025

    28 November 2025

    Following the successful completion of surveillance activities around commercial poultry premises near Pomeroy, County Tyrone and Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, the 3km Protection Zone (PZ) in place around each site, will merge with the respective 10km Surveillance Zone (SZ).

    This is effective from 20:00 on Friday 28 November 2025.

    21 November 2025

    Following the receipt of official laboratory confirmation by the National Reference Laboratory, Weybridge, England, the Chief Veterinary Officer for Northern Ireland has confirmed that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is present in a backyard flock near Bangor, County Down.

    As a result, the Temporary Control Zones (TCZs) that were put in place, effective from 10:00 on 13 November 2025 have now been revoked and replaced by 3km Protection Zones (PZs) and 10km Surveillance Zones (SZs) around the infected premises. These are effective from 09:30 today, 21 November 2025.

    All measures that must be adhered to within the PZ and SZ can be accessed on the Disease Control Zone Declarations page.

    20 November 2025

    A number of wild birds reported via the DAERA Dead Wild Bird Online Reporting Tool have tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza.

    13 November 2025

    Effective from 10:00 today, 13 November 2025, a Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) has been established around a backyard flock near Bangor, County Down, following suspicion of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1.

    The TCZ comprises a 3km TCZ-A and a 10km TCZ-B.  The TCZ declaration which details all the measures that must be adhered to within the 3km and 10km zones can be accessed on the Disease Control Zone Declarations page.

    10 November 2025

    7 November 2025

    Omagh, County Tyrone 

    Following the conclusion of veterinary surveillance activities, the Surveillance Zone (SZ) put in place following confirmation of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in a commercial poultry premises outside Omagh, Co Tyrone on 9 October 2025, will be lifted.

    This is effective from 14:00 on Saturday 08 November 2025.

    PZs and SZs remain in place near Pomeroy, County Tyrone and Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh.  Declarations can be viewed at the link below.

    5 November 2025

    Mandatory housing measures for all kept birds and poultry are to come into force across Northern Ireland (NI) from 00:01 on Thursday 06 November 2025.

    This is to mitigate against any incursion of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) into our domestic poultry sector.

    The housing order supplements the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) introduced on 1 November 2025 and legally requires all bird keepers, including owners of pet birds, commercial flocks, backyard and hobby flocks, to keep birds indoors or otherwise separate from wild birds.

    A ban on the gatherings of galliforme (including pheasants, partridge, quail, chickens, turkey, guinea fowl), anseriforme (including ducks, geese, swans) and poultry will also be implemented.

    Housing Order declared to protect poultry from Avian Influenza | Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs

    A Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) has been established around a commercial poultry premises near Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, following preliminary positive results for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

    The Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Northern Ireland (NI), Brian Dooher, has taken the decision based on a number of factors including the clinical signs and preliminary results provided by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI).

    The TCZ comprises a 3km TCZ-A and a 10km TCZ-B.  The TCZ declaration which details all the measures that must be adhered to within the 3km and 10km zone can be accessed on the Disease Control Zone Declarations page.

    24 October 2025

    An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) will be introduced in Northern Ireland from 00:01 on Saturday 1 November 2025.

    The AIPZ places a legal requirement on all bird keepers in Northern Ireland to follow strict biosecurity measures.  This applies if you keep pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard or hobby flock.

    There is currently no requirement for poultry to be housed, and bird gatherings are not prohibited at this stage, but this will be kept under constant review.

    09 October 2025
