  • Public Body Climate Change Adaptation Reporting

    Topics:
    • Climate Change

    This page is to assist public bodies who are required to report under The Climate Change (Reporting Bodies) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2024, and those who wish to voluntarily report.

    It provides information on climate change adaptation reporting, including guidance and other supporting documentation.

    Climate Change Adaptation Reports

    Under the Regulations, adaptation reports are required and submitted to DAERA on a 5-yearly basis, with the exception of the first reporting cycle which will cover a 4 year period.

    Adaptation reporting must include:

    • an assessment of the current and predicted impact of climate change in relation to a public body’s functions;
    • details of actions and plans to manage those risks and impacts including timescales for implementing; and
    • an assessment of progress in implementing the actions and plans between reporting periods.

    Public bodies must also consider and have regard, where relevant, to the:

    • latest UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) ;
    • latest Northern Ireland Climate Change Adaptation Programme (NICCAP); and
    • desirability of co-ordinating their adaptation actions, including polices and proposals, with corresponding bodies in the UK (including Northern Ireland), Republic of Ireland or elsewhere.

    Deadline for Submission

    The first adaptation reports are due to be submitted to DAERA by 31st March 2026.

    The reports will cover the four-year period from 1st January 2026 – 31st December 2029.

    Access to the Reporting Portal

    The department has developed a reporting portal for public bodies to assist them in meeting their adaptation reporting duties.

    The reporting portal is the format by which the public bodies must submit their report to DAERA and it can be accessed through the following weblink:

    Registering and Signing into the Reporting Portal

    There are a series of steps and prompts to follow to enable access to the reporting portal:

    • first register for either a Government Gateway (recommended) or NIDA account using your public body organisation work email address;
    • link your organisation with your Government Gateway or NIDA account; and
    • sign in to the reporting portal.

    How to register and sign in (videos)

    The following videos have been produced to help public bodies register and sign in to the reporting portal with either Government Gateway or NIDA.
