Data Protection Complaints Process
DAERA takes data protection, freedom of information and environmental information issues seriously. It takes care to ensure that any personal information received from you is dealt with in a way which complies with the requirements of the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act (2018).
Making a Data Protection Complaint
If you are unhappy with the way that the Department has handled your personal data, you have the right to make a complaint about the matter. You can contact us via email to the DAERA Data Protection Officer at dataprotectionofficer@daera-ni.gov.uk, or by post to:

It is useful if you include as much information as possible about your complaint, in particular including the following details -
Your name and contact details
Any unique identifying number you have with DAERA (if known)
Detailed information about the data protection issue you are making a complaint about
What you believe DAERA has done wrong
How you want the Department to make things right
What does the Data Protection Process involve?
- Once DAERA receives the complaint, we will acknowledge its receipt by email within 5 days.
- If the complaint is complex, unclear, or if multiple issues have been raised, the Data Protection team may contact you for clarification or further information.
- The Data Protection team will aim to respond to you complaint as quickly as they can, ideally within 40 days of receipt of the complaint.
- If the complaint is complex or involving a large amount of information, it may take longer than this to investigate.
- If you are still not happy, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO):
