The water environment is important to all of us. When managed appropriately it has economic, recreational, social and environmental benefits. Within Northern Ireland the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2017 are the main driver for assessing our water environment with the aim to achieve good ecological status, good chemical status and good quantitative status.
Water Classification Statistics are not updated each year due to the timescales of the monitoring.
The 2024 statistics report provides the most recent assessment for all surface water bodies (rivers, lakes and transitional & coastal). Groundwater body classifications are provided in the 2026 report.
