The following partner agencies will provide research funding in the Agriculture thematic area:

    • in the United States (US), the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) , within the US Department of Agriculture
    • in the Republic of Ireland (RoI), the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM)
    • in Northern Ireland (NI), the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA)

    Application process summary

The Agricultural and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) is one of NIFA’s major competitive grant programmes through which it addresses critical societal issues and is under the AFRI Foundation Programme that US-Ireland tripartite applicants have an opportunity to compete for awards, but limited only to the scope of the stated Programme Area Priority.

Republic of Ireland (RoI) and Northern Irish (NI) applicants in these tri-jurisdictional applications are required to obtain pre-approval from DAFM and DAERA respectively in advance of the formal submission of the combined application to the AFRI Call by the US Principle Investigator. NI and RoI applicants should ensure that they coordinate the timing of the submission of their applications to DAERA and DAFM for pre-approval.

A ‘single-proposal, single-review’ mechanism will be facilitated by NIFA who will accept submissions from tri-jurisdictional (USA, NI and RoI) teams to the relevant parts of their existing funding programmes. To be eligible all proposals submitted under the auspices of the US-Ireland R&D Partnership must have research involvement from researchers in all three jurisdictions and these will compete with standalone US-only applications in the thirteen Programme Area Priorities concerned.

Deadline dates for submitting applications under the US-Ireland R&D Partnership Call in Agriculture 2024

DAFM and DAERA will endeavour to inform you at the earliest possible date if your proposal is approved/declined but please bear in mind that DAFM and DAERA’s respective internal review process can take about 2 weeks, depending on the number of applications received at any given time.

Submission of applications is open 8 weeks in advance of the AFRI deadline and pre-proposals must be submitted to DAFM and DAERA, at the latest 4 weeks in advance of the stated RFA deadline. Applicants are advised to submit proposals to DAFM and DAERA at the earliest possible opportunity to allow for final preparations for submission to AFRI.
