Nature reserves are chosen from among the very best examples of our wildlife, habitats and geology. They contain a wide range of species, communities and geology and their designation is a public recognition by Government of their importance.

    Location

Breen Oakwood is located on the Glenshek Road (B15), 3 miles east of Armoy and 5 miles south of Ballycastle. This picturesque area is also known as one of the Antrim Coast and Glens Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

    Sights and sounds

The stunning and dramatic background of the Antrim landscape is full of character. The area also has a lot of extensive and leading conifer plantations on lower hill slopes to the south.

Today, Breen Oakwood Nature Reserve is known as one of the last areas of these once extensive woodlands. This is why this site is a popular area for birdwatchers as birds are often spotted hunting amongst the trees.

A small population of red squirrels can also be found beside the conifer plantation and are seen in the hawthorn bushes skirting the oakwood. In spring and summer the boggy pools and damp gullies are a haven for newts and dragonflies.

    Facilities

Small Forest Service Car Parking adjacent to County Road. Tracks through the wood are steep and uneven.
