Deaths of cattle must be notified to the Department within 7 days by using in order of preference:

    1. DAERA Online Services, or
    2. Telephony, 0300 200 7855, or
    3. Completing Section B of a MC1 form and submitting it to your local DAERA Direct Office.
    4. Notification by Renderer – refer to N.B. 2

Example of a MC1 - notification of births and deaths of bovine animals

N.B. 1 in addition, for animals which die aged 48 months or above, the operator of an approved Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) sampling site must be contacted by telephone within 24 hours of the animal’s death to arrange TSE sampling. Contact details can be found through the link below:

Introduction to Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE)

N.B. 2 if a dead animal has been booked directly with a renderer by the Establishment Operator (keeper) and the renderer has recorded the death on NIFAIS on their behalf, DAERA will accept this as having received a death notification from the Establishment Operator, but the legal obligation is on the Establishment Operator to notify the death and it is up to them to ensure the death has been notified, either directly by themselves or by the renderer on their behalf.
